How to Defeat Your Giants

Have you ever had to face a problem so big you thought it was impossible? My friend, James Ryle, once said, “Every person you meet is in an epic battle against an undefeatable giant.” We will all face battles in life. Today, I’m talking about how to defeat those giants in the battle.

The bible tells the story of King Hezekiah, who was a good and faithful king in Judah. His heart was right before the Lord. King Hezekiah and the people of Judah had just experienced a big breakthrough in their spiritual lives when the Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah, in 2 Chronicles 32.

What looked like an undefeatable giant had just entered the land of Judah. But our battles are not spiritual. The book of Ephesians says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:12, ESV)

We need to remember that the battles we are fighting are not against flesh and blood. Although King Hezekiah was facing the king of Assyria, he was really fighting a spiritual battle. King Hezekiah is a great example to us of how to fill our hearts with scripture and speak to the giants in our life. He looked at the people of Judah who were now surrounded by an army of people who wanted to annihilate them.

Here’s what he said, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles." (2 Chron. 32:7-8, ESV)

Here was the response of the people to King Hezekiah’s words, “Morale surged. Hezekiah’s words put steel in their spines.” (2 Chron. 32:6-8, MSG) Something happens when you grab the word of God and speak it out loud to the enemy.

What happened next is incredible. King Hezekiah took a step of faith and trusted God. Then, the bible says, the angel of the Lord showed up and killed all of the armies of the Assyrians and delivered King Hezekiah and the people of Judah! Isn’t that incredible?

What’s a giant that you’re facing right now? The worst thing you can do is think that it’s all about you and your faith and your battle. There is so much more happening than you can see. There are more surrounding you in God’s army than are against you!

Praying for you

Ed
